Poem - Restitutions

Restitutions

August 10th 2008

Guilt,
Shame,
Peace,
I don't want to be seen,
A Native Woman walks,
In the dark,
Walking briskly past buildings,
Heel to toe of the shoe touching the ground,
She walks quickly into her home,
Slams the door,
Touching the cold metal of the lock on the door to keep her safe from the world out there,
And when she turns around into her home,
She is not in light but dark,
The man has left,
He is gone,
She cries,
Bills,
Empty bottles,
Torn carpet,
Holes in the wall,
A kitchen light is out,
A wreckless energy of a broken heart,
A torn Indigenous woman,
A not seen Indigenous woman,
Loneliness engulfs her in the dim light of her own home,
Sterilization of her sacred feminine parts haunt her,
Destructive patterns,
Destructive mindset,
Annihilation,
Annihilation absorbed into her body,
From the west to the east,
To the plains,
Woodlands,
Swamps,
To the mountains,
She touches her breasts,
Vagina,
Nipples,
Clitoris,
To feel her aliveness,
But feels death,
Death because she has been raped,
Death because of sexual abuse,
Emotional abuse,
Physical abuse,
Spiritual abuse,
Death because of being dishonored,
Disrespected,
She feels the dimness of her existence,
In the dimness of her home,
As if she is completely unseen,
Forgotten,
Annihilated.

How powerful and painful this is. No one should be made to experience what has happened in the poem. It must stop happening.

Thank you for sharing this, even though it is a very painful thing. I am shy to comment on blogs usually but I had to thank you. :)

Kaitlin - Yes, no one should experience this. It is a culmination of experiences that many Native woman have experienced. It really does need to stop. I am glad you commented, thanks!

ShanaRose - Yes, thanks!

Chilling. So cold. It is sad how easily we can picture this in our minds. Domestic abuse in America, particularly when it affects WOCs, is just stapled there. I want it to end.

Dolly - I want it to end to.

ms.bliss - Indeed, that is why it is so very important to write about this!
