Gitchee Gumee, I Love the Great Lakes!

In case my blog readers haven't noticed, I currently reside in Michigan. I really do love Michigan! It is a beautiful place. I am particularly fond of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. The Ojibway call Lake Superior Gitchee Gumee/Gichigami. If you know me well I often make a ton of references to Gitchee Gumee in my everyday life.

I also dream a lot about the Great Lakes, Gitchee Gumee, and the land here. I did last night and I have a dream to share. In fact, I dreamed I was watching a sunset on Lake Michigan. In the dream I was sitting on the sand. A lot of my relatives and family were around me. The sky was completely covered with clouds and then the clouds began to part as the sun was setting. The sunset had a gorgeous array of colors from red, orange, pink and purple. The sun set fast. As soon as the sun set I went right into the water. I dove into the water in a very shallow spot. I felt very unafraid that I would dive right onto rocks and hurt myself. Although I did this once when I was a teenager and scratched up my chest pretty bad. Anyway, I swam around in the water like a fish. The water was not clear but murky. This stood out to me since Lake Michigan and Lake Superior are incredibly clean and clear! I awoke feeling energized and happy. It was like I almost took a swim in the dream time last night!

I am currently down in the huge metropolitan conglomeration of Metropolitan Detroit. Although I do not plan on staying here for my whole life. I am not a fan of the white noise of the interstate and 8 lane road I can hear from my window. I am not a fan of having to drive 45 minutes to an hour to go to the forest. So I long for the day when I can walk to the shore, meditate and connect with the land I love so much. As for now I can youtube it up and watch this really cool video that was made by this Michigander that plays the song "Sleeping Bear, Sault Saint Marie" by Sufjan Stevens. If you are a fan of the Great Lakes, and the music of Sufjan Stevens and Michigan you will love this video. Check it out....

Gitchee Gumee, how I miss her. She heals my soul and washes away my sorrow.

She is very healing. I am closer to her than you are but I am still far away.

I've never been too much of an outdoors person but, perhaps the hike will change that. Also, I've lived in Michigan all of my life and I have yet to have a true experience in one of the Lakes.I must experience that before I get too old.

Yes, you must experience Glennisha! If you live in Michigan you need to watch at least one sunset on Lake Michigan. You have seen some of my pictures on myspace that I have posted of Lake Michigan. Also, I recommend taking a day hike along the shores of Lake Michigan. Lake Huron is not so pretty probably because it has the most pollutants from this industrial part of the state. Lake Superior is gorgeous and so vast compared to any other lake.

What lake or spot of the state do you feel drawn to the most to visit?
