The Meaning of Ojibway Migisi Bineshii

I have had this blog up for a couple of months and have posted all sorts of things except for the meaning of Ojibway Migisi Bineshii. So I though that today would be the big day for that.

Ojibway (Ojibwa, Ojibwe, Chippewa, Anishinaabe) - First people or original people. It also means puckered referring to how moccasins were made by the Ojibway.

Migisi (Migizi) - Eagle

Bineshii - (Binayshee) - Bird

I have often thought that it is kind of redundant to have Migisi and Bineshii in the title of my blog. Why not just have the blog name be Ojibway Migisi or Ojibway Bineshii? But, I love birds and eagles so why not honor all aspects of who I am?

The image shown to the left is of the Ojibway Coloring Book. This was one of the many gifts my friend gave me when I lived in Colorado. She gave me a plethora of books about the Ojibway, Native Americans in the Great Lakes and Native craft books. I will not be coloring this book just because I find it so interesting and unique. If you would like to have your own copy of the Ojibway Indians Coloring Book you can order it here through the Gawehniyoh Gallery.

I thought I would also include a map of where the Ojibway and other tribes such as the Potawatomi or Odawa (Ottawa) are located. It is important to understand that the Ojibway and various tribes in the Great Lakes cross current state and province borders in the USA and Canada.

More posts to come on Ojibway heritage, culture, traditional medicine, healing and lore...

Love it. I may order one.

I wish I had spent more of my older teen and young adult years near my family, b/c I would have loved to learn Ojibwe from my uncle, who is a Preacher in N. Michigan, and does his Sunday service in English and Ojibwe. He always greets us "bousous, bousous" (I am not sure I spelled it right" and always refers to myself and my daughter by the Indian names he gave us. It's a beautiful language.

Looking forward to more of these types of posts!

Yes, I believe he is saying "Boozhoo" which means greetings or hello. It really is a beautiful language. I am learning bits and pieces these days. My Grandfather knew it fluently but passed onwards when I was 4 years old.

There are several churches in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that do the service in Ojibway and English, its really cool!

Wow, there's a lot of Ojibway where I live... and Sauxteaux (sp?). That's pretty cool. You should post more on Ojibwe culture and history! :) I also like the way Ojibway Migisi Bineshii sounds... really soft and poetic. *smiles and sighs*

Dollyspeaks - Yes, I do want to post more about Ojibway culture and history.

Your spelling was pretty close as it is spelled Saulteaux. The Saulteaux are a branch of the Ojibway (Anishinaabe) people. Where you live you probably here this but I have rarely heard this word from relatives and other family members. I usually hear Ojibway, Chippewa or Anishinaabe.

You can read more about this tribe here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saulteaux

Yeah, I like Ojibway Migisi Bineshii - it is poetic for sure! :-)
